Cooperative Extension offers classes for landscapers, nursery workers
Series of classes teach sustainable horticulture to local professionals

RENO, Nev. – University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in collaboration with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, will offer a series of eight classes for those in the green industry beginning Feb. 3.

Heidi Kratsch, Cooperative Extension horticulture specialist, said attendees “will learn science-based, sustainable horticulture practices to manage plants and landscapes efficiently and safely.”

Festival to feature 4 projects from Carson watershed students

horiz.colorWinners of the Carson River Coalition Education Working Group’s “Keep Streamsides Greener, Keep Water Cleaner” contest will be announced at the Carson River Film Festival 6:00-7:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Carson City Sheriff’s Building at 911 E. Musser St.

The student films that have been entered in the annual competition are available for viewing here. The public is invited to view the videos and to “like” their favorites.

2011 MASTER GARDENER OF THE YEAR AWARD RECIPIENTS HONORED.

Three outstanding volunteer Master Gardeners recognized for their community service and University outreach in Washoe, Douglas and Storey counties.

horiz.colorThree outstanding volunteer Master Gardeners were awarded the 2011 Master Gardener of the Year Award on Saturday, June 18th. Master Gardner Program Coordinator Wendy Hanson Mazet recognized Beverly Depew, Barbara Bardecker and Sue Jones for their contribution to the communities in which they live. Beverly Depew has been the anchor of the Western Area/Washoe County office, answering phone calls, emails and helping walk-in clients with their horticulture questions. Barbara Bardecker is a staple volunteer in Carson City. Sue Jones runs University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s soil testing program, testing soil from all over the state to help people grow healthier gardens and training other Master Gardeners to be able to do the same.
